Animal Planet's cat breed selector offers a quick, online survey with 10 questions focused on things such as personality and physical appearance. The survey results then list various breeds. This offers a great starting point.

Purchasing a cat from a breeder specializing in pedigreed cats can be expensive. There are various cat rescue associations which adopt for lower fees. On the other hand, take a stroll at your local animal shelter or cat shelter.
